Welcome thirsty foodies and beer lovers!

One thing you may not know about me is that, during my years as a Playense, I’ve spent many many nights behind a bar, serving drinks to people from all over the world, I’ve also waited tables and of course, I have taken many many tourists along the lovely tours that Eating With Carmen Food Tours has to offer. The food and beverage industry has been my home for as long as I’ve been a Playense, and that’s why I am always pleased to share with you the behind-the-scenes of our favorite dishes and drinks.

As you can read in 6 drinks You Have To Try In Playa del Carmen, besides margarita, tequila, and mezcal, Mexico has many more drinks and spirits to offer.

Mexico is the number one exporter of Commercial Beer, it might be far from being the best beer in the world, but Corona is EVERYWHERE in the world, and everyone in this beer-loving world knows Mexicans have a weird taste when it comes to drinking beer.

The all-time popular Beer Cocktails are as much part of our culture as Mexican Traditional Dishes. Back in the day, regular beer drinkers grabbed their beer cans, and each time a sip was taken they squeezed lime on the can end and sprinkled salt over the juice. Cheladas possibly are the pioneers of Beer Cocktails, followed by the famous and seasoned Micheladas and spicy Ojos Rojos, these last two, are the most popular remedies for hangovers among Mexicans.

THE CLASSIC CHELADA

MISE EN PLACE
(in layman’s: What you’ll need)

  • A frozen beer mug and extra ice cubes to keep your drink as cool as possible.
  • Salt spread on a coffee plate.
  • About 1 ½  oz of lime juice for the cocktail and some extra to help the salt stick to the rim.
  • Last but not least, your favorite Mexican Lager, Corona, or Modelo Especial work just fine but feel free to choose your favorite one.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
(no fancy term for this one)

  • Start by grabbing your frozen beer mug out from the cooler.
  • Next, you can either rub half the lime on the edge of the glass or pour some juice on a coffee plate and dip the edge of the mug.
  • Immediately, dip the mug onto the plate with salt and fully cover the rim.
  • Add 2-4 ice cubes, but that is really up to you.
  • Then pour the Lime Juice.
  • Finally, add your desired lager and a lime slice for garnish.

Refreshing Cheers!

MICHELADA

For Micheladas, we are adding some interesting ingredients, but still using the same glass and following similar steps.

  • Instead of using salt on the rim, we are going to use Tajin, a Mexican seasoning powder, made with chile flakes, salt, and lime.
  • Worcestershire sauce, about ¼ oz, remember you can always add more.
  • Maggi seasoning sauce, in the same amount as Worcestershire sauce.
  • Tabasco sauce.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS

  • Grab a frozen beer mug.
  • Repeat the second step of the Cheladas.
  • Spread the Tajin on a coffee plate and cover the rim with it.
  • Add the ice cubes.
  • Pour the lime juice, the Worcestershire sauce, the Maggi Juice, and as much Tabasco as you can handle.
  • Finally, add the beer.

Enjoy your Miches! (short word for a lot of Micheladas)

OJO ROJO

Using the same ingredients as Micheladas and all the new bartending skills you’ve learned so far, we are adding to our recipe, Clamato juice, a drink made with tomato juice, spices, and dried clam broth, giving place to the famous and intriguing, Ojo Rojo. Often compared to a Bloody Cesar but instead of Vodka, we add half a glass of beer and half a glass of clamato juice, Tajin to the rim, and celery, shrimp, or oysters as garnish.

Hangover-gone cheers!

Oh! but hold on for just one moment, this beer cocktail list doesn’t end here. For the past few years, the show behind the bar has taken bartenders to create a new generation of innovative cocktails. Pushing bartenders from all around the globe to use as many exotic ingredients as there can be. If adding meat seasoning, oysters, or shrimp for your beer cocktail wasn’t enough, beertenders have started to add traditional Mexican candy to Micheladas as garnish.

As you may know, some of our favorite candies are made with chile, tamarind, or chamoy in it. The most popular sweets used as garnishes in Micheladas are gummies. These ingredients give place to a popular cocktail called Gomichelas, using traditional gummy bears, life savers, and a wide variety of chamoy or tamarind gummies and sweets.

Lately, things have gotten out of control with beer cocktails and many exotic ingredients have been added, peanuts, dried or fresh fruits, flavored chips, and even steak or shrimp skewers!

Wait, there is more!

A street stall in a popular Mexican neighborhood market, became famous for its Gomichelas served in blender glasses. I could go on and on with the exotic upgrades to these beer cocktails, but you must try them for yourself. At least once in a lifetime. So start planning that trip!
